S2 Episode 5 - The Orphans

Adams (Dan Haggerty) and Mad Jack (Denver Pyle) find their hands full with two orphan children who ran away from the settlement orphanage. Michele (Jo Dee Jetton) and Eugene (Tiger Thompson) were tired of all the rules and regulations especially no pets, and didn't want anyone telling them what to do anymore! They wanted to live in the wilderness with all the animals they'd never had a chance to know. Besides, they know everything. For instance Michele knows that you capture a mountain lion with a lasso. She read all about living in the wilderness out of a book written by a New Jersey librarian. It takes a frightening experience with a pack of wolves to convince these children; living in the wilderness is not fun and games.

Mister Watts, who is in charge of the orphanage, comes to get the kids after being warned by Nakoma (Don Shanks) as to their whereabouts. Michele and Eugene attempt to hide from him until Adams explains to the children that Mister Watts cares about them very much and their real father would not have come any sooner.

Adams helps Mister Watts understand that discipline is not the most important part of teaching and a little love, understanding and compromise will keep the children from running away. Animals are a lot like children too; both need to think they belong to somebody. So the orphans and their burro, One-Half, go home feeling that growing up is a little like reading a book. It takes understanding on both sides and a teacher to show the way.
