Episode 5 - Howdy-Do, I'm Mad Jack

Mad Jack (Denver Pyle), the cantankerous and colorful friend of Grizzly Adams (Dan Haggerty), becomes trapped on a raft in raging rapids. He is pulled over a thundering waterfall and becomes lost in the churning water below.

Grizzly Adams searches vainly for Mad Jack, finally giving up when he finds some of the mountain man’s personal effects washed up on the jagged rocks below the falls. Adams sadly reads through Jack’s diary and recalls how the two men originally met, years earlier.

In a flashback, we learn that Mad Jack first encountered Adams when the grizzly bear, Ben, was still a cub. Jack takes Adams for a real greenhorn, teasing him with his boisterous insults and coarse mountain humor, Jack finally goads Adams into a rough-and-tumble fight by knocking down his lean-to. They gradually become close friends, growing to trust and respect each other. Each new danger the wilderness serves up becomes a challenge to them and they tackle it with enthusiasm.

As Adams reflects on what he has read in Mad Jack’s diary, jack suddenly appears from the brush…wet and tattered, but still alive. The two men happily renew their friendship.
